The baobab plant (Adansonia digitata) is native to Nigeria and thrives in arid/savanna regions. Key locations:
Northern Nigeria: States like Kano, Katsina, and Sokoto, where the climate is dry.
Wildlife Reserves: Yankari Game Reserve (Bauchi) and Gashaka Gumti Park host baobabs.
Rural Areas: Villages in Niger, Kebbi, and Zamfara often have baobabs near homes or sacred sites.
Identification: Look for massive trunks (up to 25m wide), sparse branches resembling roots, and white flowers/fruit (rich in vitamin C).
Uses: Locals use its leaves (for soup), fruit pulp (juice), and bark (medicine). NGOs like Nigerian Conservation Foundation protect baobabs.
Tips:
Ask elders or farmers for guidance—baobabs are cultural landmarks.
Visit during dry seasons (November–March) for easier spotting.
