The first devices that are considered guns or proto-guns were invented in China around 1000 AD. The earliest known depiction of a gunpowder weapon is a fire lance from a silk banner in Dunhuang from the mid-10th century. The fire lance was a spear with a bamboo or paper tube attached to the end that was filled with black powder and used as a flamethrower.
Here are some other key events in the history of guns:
12th century: A sculpture from a cave in Sichuan depicts a Chinese figure carrying a vase-shaped bombard with flames and a cannonball emerging from it.
13th century: The Mongols conquered China and spread gun technology to the Middle East and India.
15th century: The first handguns, known as matchlocks, were introduced into Europe.
1509: The wheel lock was invented, which was easier to use and more reliable than the matchlock.
1800s: The Gatling Gun was invented by Richard J. Gatling, and was the first practical, mechanically reliable weapon that could be reloaded quickly.
1884: The modern machine gun was invented by Hiram Maxim.
The earliest known gun, the “hand cannon,” appeared in China around the 10th century during the Song Dynasty. These primitive firearms used gunpowder to propel projectiles. By the 13th century, gun technology spread to Europe via the Silk Road, evolving into more advanced weapons like muskets. Guns revolutionized warfare, shifting battles from melee combat to ranged engagements. Their invention marked a turning point in military history and global power dynamics.
