Chad is a landlocked country located in north-central Africa. It is bordered by Libya to the north, Sudan to the east, the Central African Republic to the south, Cameroon and Nigeria to the southwest, and Niger to the west. The country spans approximately 1,284,000 square kilometers, making it the fifth-largest nation in Africa.
Chad’s geography is diverse, featuring the arid Sahara Desert in the north, the fertile Sahelian savanna in the center, and the more tropical Sudanian savanna in the south. Lake Chad, one of Africa’s largest freshwater bodies (though shrinking due to climate change), lies on the western border. The capital, N’Djamena, is situated near the confluence of the Chari and Logone rivers, close to the Cameroon border.
Historically, Chad was a crossroads for trans-Saharan trade and later became a French colony before gaining independence in 1960. The country is ethnically and linguistically diverse, with over 200 ethnic groups and French and Arabic as official languages. Despite its natural resources, Chad remains one of the world’s poorest nations, facing challenges like political instability, climate pressures, and economic struggles.
