The term “Dark Continent” was coined by European explorers in the 19th century, reflecting their limited knowledge of Africa’s interior. It implied mystery and unfamiliarity, not skin color. Africa’s diverse cultures, landscapes, and histories were misunderstood or unknown to outsiders, leading to this outdated and misleading label. Today, it’s seen as inaccurate and colonial.
