Personally, yes, I think google count nofollow links as a backlink when it comes to search engine marketing. However, when it comes to search engine ranking, Google does not regard nofollow links as authoritative links and a such, they passes no link juice, relevance or authority from the linking source site to the ref’ page (your site).
For example; your site can have 10 backlinks, and 4 of them are nofollow links. These means Google will only recognize the other 6 links with a “follow rel” attribute.
