Rose rosette virus (RRV) is a disease that causes rose rosette disease (RRD), a damaging and often fatal condition that affects roses:
Symptoms
RRD causes abnormal growth, including deformed leaves and flowers, excessive thorns, and witches’ brooms. Roses with RRD may also have elongated shoots, thickened stems, and red or yellow leaf mottling.
Transmission
RRV is spread by eriophyid mites, such as Phyllocoptes fructiphilus and Phyllocoptes arcani, which can crawl between plants, be carried by air currents, or attach to insects. The virus can also be transmitted through grafts.
