Money is a medium of exchange and store of value used in transactions. It originated from the need for a more efficient way to facilitate trade beyond bartering goods. Historical forms of money include commodities like shells or precious metals. Over time, societies transitioned to using coins made of standardized materials for easier trade. Later, paper money and digital currency emerged as more convenient mediums of exchange.
According to research, people even used live animals such as cows until relatively recent times as a form of currency. The Mesopotamian shekel – the first known form of currency – emerged nearly 5,000 years ago.
The earliest known mints date to 650 and 600 B.C. in Asia Minor, where the elites of Lydia and Ionia used stamped silver and gold coins to pay armies.
