While a student in Paris, Romanian Petrache Poenaru invented the fountain pen, which the French Government patented in May 1827. Fountain pen patents and production then increased in the 1850s. The first patent on a ballpoint pen was issued on October 30, 1888, to John J Loud.
The modern pen as we know it was created by Lewis Waterman in the late 19th century. Waterman patented the first practical fountain pen in 1884, which featured a capillary feed system to regulate the flow of ink. This innovation eliminated the need for dipping pens in inkwells, making writing more convenient and portable. Waterman’s invention marked a significant advancement in writing technology, paving the way for the development of various types of pens we use today.
