Rugby and American football showcase incredible athleticism and strategy on the field. With similar origins, that’s almost where the similarities end: the ball is oval but is different; the field size and goals are different; they boast different gameplay styles and are immersed in their own cultures.
Rugby is a contact sport played by two teams of 15 players (or 7 in Rugby Sevens). The objective is to score more points than the opponent by carrying, passing, or kicking the ball into the opposition’s goal area.
Scoring:
Try (5 points): Grounding the ball in the opponent’s in-goal area.
Conversion (2 points): Kicking the ball over the crossbar after a try.
Penalty/Drop Goal (3 points each): Kicking through the posts from open play (drop goal) or after a penalty.
Gameplay Rules:
Players can only pass the ball backward or sideways; forward passes result in a scrum (a contest for possession).
Tackling is allowed, but players must release the ball immediately after being tackled.
The ball can be kicked forward, but teammates must be behind the kicker to avoid being offside.
Lineouts restart play when the ball goes out of bounds, with players lifting teammates to catch the ball.
Key Principles:
Continuous play with minimal stoppages.
Physicality within fair play—dangerous tackles are penalized.
Possession is contested in scrums, rucks, and mauls.
